ENOUGH!!!!!
Read the article linked below, watch the video, start writing letters to your representatives. Google "Iowa Cyclist Killed" Read the articles. Geez.
Riding safely isn't enough. It seems that every cyclist has a target on his or her back. There appears to be a hatred of cyclists out there and it's getting worse. Drivers do not want us on the roads. They don't want to fulfill their obligation to pay attention while driving and to watch out for us. Many think that the interior of the car or truck is the surrogate office or bathroom. Phones, application of make up, reading the paper or a book. Yes, I saw a guy reading the paper while driving as I left work last Wednesday.
I suggest training law enforcement so that they understand the laws as they relate to cyclists, then get them out and enforce those laws.
Perhaps the speed limit on county roads needs to be reduced to 45 mph? And strictly enforced.
So frustrated.
Killing cyclists is not ok.

Ride safe.
Peace out, yo!

That is just so sad Blue, I'm sorry to hear that the cycling community has lost yet again another rider.
There is a big bruhawhaw going on in Ottawa right now where they want cycling banned on certain roadways....WTF.
Stay safe too. ; )
That "citezens for safety coalition" is the part that really bothers me. Maybe cyclists should start a moronic movement that keeps cars off tertiary roads. I guess you shouldn't be allowed to walk anywhere, either. And motorcycles can be hard for the poor distracted drivers to see; we need to get them off the road. And, big trucks go slow sometimes and are hard to pass. Let's get them off the road, you know, for safety and all. What about old people, they should be off the road. Young drivers, my God, they are a danger, aren't they? What about blacks and hispanics. When I see them driving, I am distracted. And, men- they are aggressive. How about this: only miidle aged white women in mid sized, boxy, automobiles, should be aliowed to drive.
I'm with craig. when is this stupidity going to end? the thing that most pisses me off about the telling of this story (including the news report) is the fact that no one mentioned, we have a RIGHT to be there. regardless of a cars speed and power, it does not have sole occupancy of the roads. until they start teaching and enforcing that, we will continue to see sad unnecessary deaths of cyclists. period.
I agree with the above it is just an insane attitude, but I have to say thanks Craig, for I am a middle aged woman in a boxy mid-size ~ at exactly what time should I be picking you boys up????
Maybe Iowa should take a lesson from Arizona.....we have so many cyclists and they actually have widened roads to ensure the safety of those on two wheels. Our state and counties actually have incentives for these riders to encourage them to keep riding their bikes. Not only does it help to rid our fine state of polutants and the state emphasizes the important benefits of cycling not only for our environment but for the health of those that are riding. It wasn't always this way but I do believe a unified voice is eventually heard. It is unfortunate that people have to lose their life for merely doing what they are passionate about.
lily....
some days just suck.
craig....
always love your insight. :)
oldman....
you're right, we do have a right to the full use of the lane. it's just getting insanely dangerous out there.
lily....
picking us boys up? you are one brave lady! you have no idea what you'd be getting yourself into. lol.
susi....
some places just seem to have it together. not sure about the bike lanes that go straight through the
turn lanes down there, but it seems to work.
oh Blue, I'll try anything once! (well, maybe NOT) LOL,
Susan, I love the fact that at least one state has their head screwed on straight. We are going through one hell of a fight right now in Ottawa...too bad our Nation's Capital can't set a proper example...
An Arizona cyclist was killed by a drunk driver this week. Appears it was an illegal alien that hit him and kept on going. When the police found the driver he admitted that he "hit something but I didn't know what it was so I kept going" He is in jail now....waiting to hear the charges. Photos on the news showed police (men and women) crying at the scene.....very sad. His father has placed a 'ghost cycle' at the scene of the incident in memory of his son.
