225 down, 95 to go....
Judy and I drove down to Traer last night to chat with G-Ted and to watch some of the racers come through on TI v.5. Good stuff, believe me.
We were at the BP station in Traer, which was serving as checkpoint 3. It was 225 or so miles into the race that began at 4 a.m., with about 95 miles to go. The leaders came in at 7:45 p.m. and were back out at 8:15. An hour or so later a chase group rolled in, took nourishment, and left.... These guys were maintaining a killer pace on the gravel and "B" roads of Iowa. Brootal is all I can say. 52 started, and last I knew, there were about 18 left in the race.
Tony Kisch and I waited for Fatty to roll in and made sure he had the encouragement he needed to get to his next stop, then we headed back to Waterloo. Fatty was riding strong with a guy who had come out from California to do this race. I walked in the house at about 2 a.m. It didn't take long for me to fall asleep.
I know that G-Ted and David Pals are still awake out there waiting for all of the finishers to come across the line in Williamsburg. You guys put on a great race! (er, ride...) A bit insane, but.... :)
It looks to be a beautiful day shaping up outside. :)
Ride safe.
Peace out, yo!

After talking to Carl I had no idea what you guys put yourselves through....I am totally impressed~
Thanks for coming out, Blue!It was great fun. Word of your pizza and beer escapade reached me in Williamsburg the next day and the racers were buzzing about the Traer stop.
Charlie Farrow, the guy that was laying down there, he scavenged papers off peoples doorsteps to fashion a impromtu blanket, slept three hours, and got back on his bike to finish 8th over all.
Brootal indeed!
Fatty was wasted at the finish. But he did it!
susi....
those guys are tougher than hell. some of them are "touched", if you know what i mean....
g-ted....
it was fun! pizza and beer? mmmmm...... sounds good! lol.
actually, the bp was closing and i was hungry so i went down to pizza palace and bought a few larges. i wasn't quite as hungry as i thought i was, so i left them on the curb in front of the bp. i hope they got put to good use! :)
we're all proud of fatty. what a tough little f****r he is!
you guys did a great job and had some great volunteers. i know all of the "racers" appreciate what you guys do.
Thanks for the guiness and the stories!
david....
you're certainly welcome! it was good seeing you again. you and g-ted gave a lot of people the opportunity to challenge themselves and i think they enjoyed it! it was a success! good on ya!
This Guinness sure tastes pretty darn good right now!!! You guys are heading out on the group ride and I'm drinking a beer...hmmm...sucks to be you guys!!! :)
fatty....
missed you tonight, buddy. figgered i'd be able to kick your ass, bein's you're all tuckered out and all.... another time, i guess. drink more guinness. :)
Nope, just scared of getting my ass kicked by you!
Blue - You ought to get a report - just like a reporter - from Ron and J Fry on their VI 5 experiences - inquiring minds need to know...
John
John....
i didn't see ron but i did see fatty at checkpoint 3. he was tough. he looked strong as an ox and was just as full of it as normal....
That's not much of a report. I want some blood sweat and tears. Wild animals, broken bones, lost by miles, bikes falling apart...
You know some real stuff. At least some questions and answers with the fat one.
John
john....
i tried to interview him last night but he wasn't too forthcoming. told me that the only way i'd know would to be to ride it next year. i told him i didn't want to know that bad. all i can say is that i'd still be couchbound. brootal.
Yeah, Blue - I'll join you on the couch.
John
